A God Who Pitches Tents

And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth. From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. (John 1:14.16) In the Old Testament, God manifested His presence to His chosen people the Israelites through the Ark of the Covenant, a sacred dwelling place in which the Law was kept. This tabernacle covered with a large tent was the constant reminder of God’s presence in the midst of His people, and of His faithfulness to His covenant. When we read in John’s Gospel that “the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us,” the Greek verb which we usually translate as “made his dwelling” literally means “He pitched his tent”.
