I was born and raised in a culture, a country and in a family that not only honor, but rewards those who are assertive, independent, and self-sufficient. My family is large and warm, but also loquacious and direct. To make your voice heard you must compete, in some way, with those who are already talking so as to steal the attention, if only for a moment. I was an expert at being the center of attention and of convincing others to follow suit.
